| DESCRIPTION: This is a very
dramatic art piece from a special squadron of the Luftwaffe, which was quartered in the ancient town of Lübeck in 1941. It is an
aluminum aircraft plate mounted within a thick wooden framing device. It
has a Luftwaffe officer's cap set that is carved directly in wood--beautifully
executed in detail. The writing refers to the Möve (Seagull) squadron.
Its motto obviously was Blitzartic Schnell. This translates
roughly to "Lightning Quick." The metal part measures 12 ½ X 7
½ inches and the wooden part is 13½" x 17½" and is 1¼"
thick. The Me-110 was the other workhorse of the Luftwaffe and proved its
worth flying defensive missions at night. It carried radar, which enabled
it to see in the dark, and had an upright 20-mm cannon in the cockpit that
could be fired at enemy bombers from directly underneath.
