Special Collection of Studio Cards Mostly of the Wild West

Page 1

We were fortunate enough to buy this fabulous collection that was maintained over the years by a collector of such. Most of them are in pretty fine condition; some of them have the photography-studio information on the backside. The collector probably never realized that his collection would be very valuable one day. I am not sure how he displayed them but in several of them there is a tiny pinhole at the top, but usually well out of the subject picture itself. He must have pinned them to a wall or something. The pinholes really do not detract from the great photography that you will see here. In some cases, there is simply writing on the back that identifies the subject seen on the obverse. In other cases, the backsides are very handsome. The studios that produced these in the 1880s to the 1890s and the turn of the century were very proud of their photography work and often handed out these pieces to advertise their products. As far as I can determine, all of the cards that we have are original from the time, and they are quite rare and sought after.

Pueblo Woman, Acoma Mary, Seen with Pottery (Item WILDWEST 1-2)

DESCRIPTION: This card is one of the many that we received when we bought a collection of studio cards that mostly date in the 1880s. This one is from a studio in Marion, Ohio. It is nicely scalloped along the edges of the card (an exceptional job). It depicts the Pueblo woman holding a large and magnificent Southwest pottery jug. The back is rather plain but with handwriting from the former collector and it has the lady’s name with the year “1900” and “Arizona Territory.” It’s in very nice condition, throughout.

PRICE: $150.00

Photograph of a Hunkpapa Sioux Chief (Item WILDWEST 1-3)

DESCRIPTION: The picture depicts the stern-looking Sioux war chief wearing an eagle-feather bonnet and an elaborately beaded war shirt. The picture, although very fine, has no indication of the studio that produced it on neither front nor back. There is just some writing done by the former collector wherein he describes the picture and gives the date “1882” and “Fort Yates.” Card measures 5 by 4½ inches. Good condition.

PRICE: $125.00

Original Studio Card Portrait of Wild Bill Hickok (Item WILDWEST 1-4)

DESCRIPTION: This studio card depicts Bill dressed in frontier regalia with a bearskin cap. In this photo he cuts a handsome figure and it is one of his most famous poses. The card was published by John R. Ryder of Cleveland, Ohio, who was a leading photographer of the time. On the back of the card is Ryder’s logo and information. At one time, the card must have been attached to an album and there is evidence of its being attached to another page at one time. Other than that, the card is in very fine condition and measures 6½ x 4¼ inches. This is one of the best pieces found in the collection.

PRICE: $250.00
