Hand-painted Art Spoon of Richard Wagner (Item WAG 1-1; ART 13-4)

DESCRIPTION: Here is an absolute gem of Wagnerian theme art the world’s greatest composer (our opinion) is depicted in lifelike realism. This art spoon is entirely hand painted by someone back in the 1800s, who was a master miniaturist of the first order. The immortal master composer of Bayreuth is shown with his ever-present beret upon his head. Wagner, 1813-1883, was not only a great musician, but a philosopher of note and an author of renown. See our description of another miniature portrait at Item OLD 4-3. The spoon is of a type sold at the Wagner homestead and museum in Bayreuth back in the days when an Andenken, or souvenir, was not a mere plastic insult to the memory of great men and great times. They were costly even in their time, but they were fine and beautiful and treasured today by connoisseurs of elegant and meaningful, historical relics of the grand era. The spoon measures about 5 1/4 inches. It’s crafted in ‘800’ silver and is so marked with the half moon and crown plus a maker’s logo. The harp shown at the top is typical of the Germanic symbol for classical music. Just below this is a white enameled section labeled “Bayreuth.” This is a true Germanic treasure.

Siegfried’s Sword “Nothung” (Item WAG 1-2)

DESCRIPTION: This is a sword that was used in the Wagnerian opera Ring des Nibelungen. Beautifully constructed it is the Teutonic weapon extraordinaire! It was the sword named “Nothung.” It was the enchanted sword with fantastic magical propensity that Siegfried used to kill the dragon, Fafnir. It was forged by Weyland the smith. The sword was destroyed, but reforged by Siegfried, who, after it was finished, cuts the very anvil in half. This piece is about 150 years old and is actually hand forged as a mighty, formidable weapon. The grip is pure bronze constructed from several pieces (planchets). It has a special feel in the hand and when lifted aloft one feels ready to immediately go forward to slay dragons, giants, and Untermenchen and possibly a liberal or two. It’s 41 inches long (big).

PRICE: $480.00

Richard Wagner Medallion and Silver (Item WAG 1-3)

DESCRIPTION: This crown-sized medallion was struck to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death on 13/2/1833, of the great composer. It measures about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and has a mark on the rim “Sachsmunze,” which means it was struck at the Saxon coin vault. Around the bust portrait of Wagner is his name in high relief. At the neck are the artist’s initials "FH," and a star logo appears at the bottom. The back bears a simple strand of laurel with the date the piece was struck to commemorate. This study of the master is wonderful and captures the dedication and resolve that we know he put forth. In my mind he stands as the greatest of all composers then and now.

Commemorative Plate by Rosenthal from the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth (Item WAG 1-4)

DESCRIPTION: This is a beautiful commemorative edition by the famed firm of Rosenthal in Selb. This great opera house was the dream brought to fruition by the greatest German composer, Richard Wagner. Built in 1876 and dedicated principally to the performance of operas by the famed composer. It is the exclusive venue for the annual Bayreuth Festival for which it was specifically conceived and built. The funding for the construction was provided by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It was first opened for the premier of the completion of the four-opera cycle of “Ring des Nibelungen” 13-17 August 1876. Adolf Hitler made the annual pilgrimage to the Festspielhaus each year. He was the world’s most avid Wagner fan, but also close to Winifred Wagner and her family. He attended the festivals between 1933 and 1939. He made the Wagner estate his second home. For an explanation select this link. It is not bad; a little slanted, but informative nonetheless. The plate was designed and produced before the era of the Third Reich 1920s or so, but sold right into the NS 1930s. It measures 8 1/2 inches in diameter and is in perfect shape. This is a true collectable for the Wagner fan. The plate is in the Rosenthal blue as are so many other commemoratives of the fabulous maker.

The Wagner/Hitler Connection (Item WAG 1-5; AH 21-7; GEN 12-8)

DESCRIPTION: Richard Wagner und die Stadt der Meistersinger is a precious book produced to celebrate the 125th birth year of the immortal artist, Richard Wagner. It was published in 1938 and it was published with a foreword that was written by Richard Wilhelm Stock, producer of “Volksbuchs” for every German. He writes a foreword employing much in the way of comparing the great composer’s words and warnings about a Jewish menace in the arts that was carried into the policies of the NSDAP. The entire book has photos and references to Adolf Hitler's reverence and respect for the Wagner's and this the grandiose music of the master. Pictures of the Führer with Winifred Wagner, and also many of the party leaders are shown from visits to Bayreuth. Goebbels, Siebert, Ritter von Epp, Schwartz, Göring, Julius Streicher, and Amann are shown. The history of the family, the scenes from the operas, and musical scores are in beautifully produced photography. The book has 230 pages with a linen-like cover in perfect, practically mint condition. This is an extremely important historical volume. The grandsons and granddaughters posed with the Führer are perfect specimens of Aryan nobility as envisioned by National Socialist principles and agenda. The apparent parallels between Wagner's visions and the NS state are clear and concise. It's true that Wagner influenced Hitler throughout his entire life from the NS beginnings in the 1920s (“Siegfried’s Rhine Journey”) to the collapse of the Third Reich (“Götterdämmerung”). This is possibly the finest and most important book we have ever offered on Germania's site.

Book Festschrift (Item WAG 1-6; ART 14-9)

DESCRIPTION: The great Nuremberg Opera House was built in 1905 and sits majestically in the Richard Wagner Platz in Nuremberg. It is one of Germany's most beautiful theater buildings. During the 1930s, the National Socialist government was the sponsor of the Nuremberg State Theatre. During this festive time, the main performances were of Richard Wagner's operas and of course the Meistersinger of Nuremberg was an often-repeated theme. This 68-page soft-cover book was published by the Lord Mayor of Nuremberg in September of 1935. On the opening page is a picture of a Hitler bust by Professor Ferdinand Lieberman that was presented to the Opera House followed by three pages of quotes by the Führer concerning art and culture. There is a foreword by Reich's Minister Dr. Joseph Goebbels, with his picture and another foreword pronouncement by the Gaulieter and Frankenführer Julius Streicher. There is a published review of the newly reopened building as an important addition to the enrichment of the cultural life in Germany engineered by the NS government structure. The party completely renovated the old building, and much of this effort is illustrated. There are numerous pictures of opera greats who performed on this grand opening night, which must've been a fantastic occasion. Many illustrations abound of the costuming and stage settings. The book measures 7 x 10 inches and is in remarkably good condition with a fold or two on the cover. Fine, slick paper stock was used and the photography is wonderful. One of the pictures is of the Chief Mayor Willy Liebel, whose project this was, and who dedicated so much to it. This is a rare and vastly important volume.

Book Bayreuth die Stadt Richard Wagners (Item WAG 1-7; ART 17-15)

DESCRIPTION:  This is a great softcover book comprising 80 pages of beautiful pictures and text with a concise history of Bayreuth. It freatures the Festspielhaus and the world’s greatest composer (in my opinion), Richard Wagner. The book was published in 1942. So many of the pages detail Adolf Hitler’s infatuation with my hero and Winifred Wagner, a lady that the Führer vastly admired; the feeling was mutual. Winifred was steadfast in her loyalty to Adolf Hitler and when the Americans at the “show trial” at Nuremberg tried to get her to deny him, she outright refused and praised him. The book is filled with great pictures of various scenic props and staging of the operas plus pictures of the actors who had starring roles in the elaborate and thrilling presentations. There are also charming pictures of Wagner and his beloved wife, Cosima. There are also great pictures of Haus Wahnfried and the museum. The pictures are exemplary sharp and clear. This book personifies the great glory of the Wagnerian mythos. It measures 9 x 12 inches. At the rear of the book are about 15 pages of advertisements of many types; from travel inducements to ads for fine wines, hotels, the Nymphenburg Porcelain Company, banks, restaurants, etc., and even includes an invitation to the Nuremberg Party Rally (Reichparteitag). This is a very important volume that depicts in wonderful detail the wonderful cultural pursuits of the Third Reich.

PRICE:$265.00 This is an ultra-rare book!
