SS Ahnenerbe Ring

SS AHNENERBE RING (Item AHN 1-1)

DESCRIPTION:    This is a very rare ring of the ancestral heritage foundation, Deutsches Ahnenerbe, that was set up by H. Himmler in 1935. This was a learned society concerned with prehistory. It became a vast study group with expeditions to Tibet and actual occult studies and medical experiments. The ring bears the runes in a completely different mode or configuration. The way they are depicted would be similar to the usage in the true Germanic runes as shown on some of the shields of the ancient Norsemen, and that was a great part of the Ahnenerbe research. So it would be clearly in keeping with them to use it on the official members' rings. The 800 silver mark is distinguishable in the inner shank of the ring. This is one of the group that came from the Stuttgart negotiations (see our description of the various Victory Rings), Item SS 3-3. Two of the companies that items were liberated from had the Ahnenerbe- contract from the Reichsführer- office and the WVHA (Central Office of the Administration and the Economy). The design for the ring was by Wolfram Sievers, who took its motif from pictures of Teutonic and Viking shields. Sievers was a member of the since 19 August 1935. Organization and finance of the Ahnenerbe were in his hands as secretary-general of the society since its foundation. Professor Walter Wüst was its titular president. The Ahnenerbe organization of the invented the technique of study and research groups made up of researchers coming from different intellectual disciplines, but all working on a common theme. This method is still used today, with success in practically all universities. Dr. Wilhelm Teudt, a former priest, who had a passion for German culture and was famous for his research and theses, joined the NSDAP in 1933. He also entered the Ahnenerbe- and became director of the Department of the Externsteine and was concerned with rich excavations of the rocks and cliffs in the Teutoberg Forest where the German tribesmen of Arminus crushed the Roman legions of General Varus in the year 9 of our era. This place, sacred in German history, was a repository of the culture of the prehistoric age. Dr. Teudt made it a territory of extreme ideological interest for the where none but members of the society had the right to carry out excavations. A further objective of this prehistoric research was to gather up the largest amount of information on the oldest Germanic and Teutonic traditions; the Ehrenring with death's head, for example. Symbolic runes employed were some of the fruits of this research. The initial purpose, however, was to rediscover and revive the past to the point that in doing so the future would emerge more beautiful. It must be kept fervently in mind that all of us live in the present, dream of the future, but our only learning must come from the past so long as that learning is directed and managed, whereby we study all cultures, but exalt our own glorious past, only then will we take on the mantel of racial greatness that we justly deserve. The 50 or so departments of the Ahnenerbe ranged from expeditions to Tibet and taking over prehistory departments of schools and museums; astronomical study; publishing many books and brochures, including the Deutsches Ahnenerbe, the Nordland, the Germanien; the establishment of the publishing house of Ahnenerbe Stiftung in Berlin in 1939; excavations at Viking sites; first experiments in the anticancer campaign; excavations in Greece, Poland, Slovakia; archaeological research in the Caucasians in 1942; and the protection of prehistoric tombs and sites in southern Russia in 1942. The research arms of this organization reached far and wide across Europe and Asia. The work of its cultural commission had results that are recognized as being far beyond its time. It was a definite positive factor in the and National Socialism. Yes, there were studies in occult sciences, but as research only! The society was no "Merlin party" as is constantly indicated in the books and articles by trash diggers such as Ravenscroft in his book,The Spear of Destiny.  As far as identifying insignia of this organization is concerned, two different rings, a lapel pin, and a patch or so were the only things that set the Ahnenerbe- personnel aside from others of the RFSS staff. We, at Germania, are very proud to offer this very scarce ring now to the collecting public.

PRICE: $1,200.00; Extremely rare!

Irminsul SS Ring (Item AHN 2-5; SS 2-5)

DESCRIPTION: This is one of the most interesting rings of the SS. We believe it had something to do with the ancestral heritage study group Ahnenerbe. There are a couple of reasons for our speculation. Unlike some of the other rings that came in the huge collection bought in Stuttgart, there was no bench identification for these when found. We do know that at least one of the jewelry manufacturers in Ludenscheid, where these were found, had the Ahnenerbe contract. The other ring, with the odd runic design, was easy to identify because there were labels and bin identification. Unfortunately, this one must go on a degree of speculation, but there is a strong case for the possibility and probability. The top of the ring has the shape of a runic planchet as used by the ancients in foretelling futures and was used in other Pagan ceremonies and rituals. We know that the Ahnenerbe did not have any particular uniform, but several pieces of jewelry to include rings, stickpins, and brooches, did exist. The most convincing aspect of this Ahnenerbe connection is evident in the design of the shank of this ring. To each side of the runic top are motifs that appear to depict a symbol that was important to this SS organization, that was always cloaked in mystery. This was the Irminsul, tree of destiny, Wotan's monument. This immediately became an icon throughout the SS Reich! It was found in ironwork, wood carvings, paintings, and bronze sculptures. It was shown in many different forms, but always with a strong center trunk and always the flowing branches that sometimes dip and sometime curl, but ever Teutonic- or Celtic-looking in form. As a historian very interested in the Charlemagne and Wittikind saga and its Irminsul involvement, I honestly believe this beautiful ring is an Ahnenerbe-connected relic. Everything seems to point in that direction. I will be most happy to add an example to my own extensive collection of N.S. rings. With classic lines and aesthetic beauty, this is one of the finest and immeasurably important pieces of Germanic jewelry ever found. Marked inside the shank is "835" (silver content).

Official Ring of the SS Runes Ahnenerbe (Ancestral Heritage Foundation) (Item AHN 4-9 & SS 34-11)

DESCRIPTION: This was the finger ring of the Ancestral Heritage Foundation. For a background of this academic study group see AHN 1-1 in this section.  This ring like the one mentioned at AHN 1-1 was designed by Dr.Wolfram Sievers who was Reichsgeschaafsfuhrer or General Secretary of the Ahnenerbe from 1935 to 1945. Dr. Sievers was an SS Standartenfuhrer who in 1943 became director of the Wehrwessenshafliche Institute for Military Scientific Research, a separate department of the SS Ahnenerbe, thus receiving his doctorate. The organization was a many faceted entity. The main function was to promote the science of ancient intellectual history. There was a genealogy section, a archeological office, an ancient arts department, a meteorological section, a musicology department whose aim was to determine the “essence of Germanic music", and well known is the expedition department that sent study groups to places like Tibet, the German Island of Rugen, and  Backa Sweden. A Middle East trek was launched to study an internal power struggle of the Roman Empire which was fought between the Nordic and Semitic peoples. An entire vast department was devoted to the study of pagan cultures even to the point of studying sorcerers and witches, however it should be pointed out that any connection of the organization or for that matter the Third Reich with occult practices was limited to academic study and in no way did the N.S Government nor the Ahnenerbe research teams indulge in these practices -- that is just pure Hokum!  Especially ludicrous is the book by Trevor Ravenscroft “The Spear of Destiny, The Powers of the Holy Lance.” The lance which was the spear of Longinus was actually associated with Christianity not the occult. It was a symbol of faith and fulfillment not an evil entity as Ravenscroft indicates. He also describes Wolfram Sievers as some sort of an evil ‘Warlock.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. The professors of the heritage Foundation were hard working dedicated and brilliant academics who have left positive and great studies to the world. There were at least 50 separate departments of this organization all headquartered in Berlin. The symbol of the Ahnenerbe is a Teutonic sword, whose form also represents a crucifix...the symbol of Christianity. Twisted around it is the ‘Wotan Knot’ signifying the ancient roots of pre-Christian Nordic anthropological beginnings that gave way to the following of Jesus the Nazarene. (“My Savior” !) Around this the words are written in runic shaped letters spelling out- - - - ‘Deutsches Ahnenerbe’ which stands for the actual organizational name which was Forschungs und Lehrgemeinshaft Das Ahnenerbe E.V. (Research and Teaching Community for Ancestral Heritage). This was adopted as the title in 1937. The main mission was to experiment and launch voyages with the interest of proving that prehistoric and mythological Nordic populations once ruled the world!  Movies and TV series have spread much misinformation about this intensely significant establishment. When the various items of jewelry were purchased by us at Stuttgart there were a few of these official Ahnenerbe rings as well as others that had been produced. An original order was also found for these pieces and a total of 30 of them were to be produced. However, we found only five. So, it is assumed that either the other 25 were not produced as of that time in 1943 or that twenty five were delivered to the organization; I guess we will never know for sure

The rings are what I might call a masterpiece of jewelry design with the sword and knot emblem and Ahnenerbe spelled out. The sides have an image of the sacred Saxon idol (The Irminsul); see page 2 of this section at AHN 2-5 for a brief explanation of the Irminsul that is contained within a description of another ring that we suspect was produced for the SS Ahnenerbe. The rings are constructed in pure 835 silver and are so stamped inside. The enameling was hand applied in Niello style and the original design was by SS Standartenfuhrer Dr.Sievers according to various notes and papers found among shop orders.  The work is exemplary and the ring is very handsome in its presentation.  But more important is the great academic accomplishments of this meaningful and distinguished group of scientists and professors. The ring is the only symbol of this organization made for everyday wear and reminds us of the outstanding accomplishments in the field of archeology and genealogy forwarded by this Ahnenerbe group.

Special Teutonic Ring used by the Ancestral Heritage Foundation (Ahnenerbe) (Item AHN 5-1)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a ring that was originated in the workshop of the famed jeweler Herr Franz Schnell in Halle, Germany. You can read about this and how we acquired many rare and historically important pieces if you go to the section titled About Our Rings and Silver Insignia . This particular ring was Herr Schnell’s personal design and no other company has ever made it. He made rings of this design sparingly maybe a dozen for the Ahnenerbe and the Hitler Youth. The design comes from the ancient pattern known to and worn by the ancient Teutonic tribes such as the Cherusci. The pattern incorporates an Irminsul design that encloses an enameled swastika in the center of the branches that quite artistically come together in this beautiful pattern brought forward from the ancient world. The ring measures up and down 1 ¼ tall and about 1 inch wide. There is an “835” silver mark inside. This truly fascinating piece incorporates the Third Reich with its wonderful Teutonic mythos at forefront. This is possibly one of the rarest jewelry items of the Reich. We sold all the originals of this ring, but it was so popular that we felt compelled to arrange to have re-creations made and the one we now offer is an exact replica of the original, expensively created by a master jeweler.
