GERMAN PATRIOTIC CLOCK (Item KCLOCK 1-2)
|
DESCRIPTION: This clock fits into
a field of collecting that can be considered "lonely" in that
there has hardly been any information or hype on it at all to date. In the
1890s through 1914 there was, in German-Americans, a feeling of intense
patriotism not only for their adopted land, America, but for the land of
their roots, the German fatherland (the Kaiser's Germany). Thus, a
striving enterprise was born. The manufacture and sale of articles that
were produced were mostly made in New York and sold to German patriots,
articles that reminded a Prussian, a Bavarian, a Rhinelander or his
Vaterland beyond the sea. We at Germania have recognized the
collectibility of these now-rare articles and we diligently search for
them and attempt to procure them at every opportunity. We present here a
magnificent mantle clock in iron that is an alarm clock as well. The
clockwork is by the famous firm of Westclock and so marked. It also bears
a patent date of 1902. The dramatic German eagle that has a nautical theme
has the legend Zur Erinnerung an die Grosse Zeit, "To the memory of
the Great Time." On the back is a company stamping E. Kelch N.Y. City
145 E. 23rd St . This is truly a wonderful desk piece or museum
addition.
