Book Jugend um Hitler, Youth Around Hitler (Item YOUTH 6-4; AH 16-7)

DESCRIPTION: Here is an extremely rare Heinrich Hoffman soft-cover book that shows the German Aryan youth admired so much by the Führer, Adolf Hitler. The essence of the NSDAP was youth. Nothing was more important. To the Bewegungskameraden, youth was naturally the future and the future had to be formed there and then. Hitler was enamored by youth not as the yellow-rag journalists indicate, but with a true sense of love for the children that he believed would with early indoctrination in sport, religion, and most importantly, racial pride and patriotism would make them rise to be the Herrenvolk of the future. The book is the typical Hoffmann book, but is one of the scarcer ones. The condition of the cover is, in a word, terrible. But from page 1 on, the pages are fine and the photography is some of the most excellent from the man whose every work was par excellence. The beaming faces of the fair-haired little Teutons tell much of their feeling for he who led their beloved Germany. A famous controversial little girl to whom the Führer paid particular attention was a Fräulein named Bernile Nienau. There are five full-page photos of her with the Führer. She certainly was the little apple of his eye. These pictures are at the end of the book. Heinrich Hoffmann on page 193 of his book, Hitler Was My Friend, said, “If Hitler was in a good mood he would summon children out of the crowd at the Obersalzberg and entertain them to tea or cakes on the Berghof terraces. Sometimes inevitably among the little guests were some who were not of pure Aryan descent and among the many photographs which I took of these kindergarten receptions and which, when published in all innocence in my volume caused a great flutter. On one occasion a very lovely and eager little child attracted Hitler's attention, and he had a long talk with her and invited her mother to bring the little girl often to see him. Little Berneli, as the child was named, became Hitler's admitted sweetheart, and many were the snaps I took of them on the terrace together. Her father, we found, was an ex-officer, who had won the Iron Cross, Class I. Then one of the many over-zealous busybodies of the Party, who knew the family and had nothing better to do than to scurry to Bormann and tell him that the child was not of pure Aryan descent. Bormann immediately forbade the mother and child ever to appear in Hitler's presence again, but—and this was typical of the man—he did not tell Hitler what he had done. Later, when Hitler enquired what had become of his little friend, Bormann was merely evasive. A real row started, however, when Bormann saw the photo of Hitler and the little girl together in my book. In great excitement he demanded that the photograph should be forthwith removed, and when I told him that this was technically not possible, he demanded that the whole book should be scrapped. This was too much of a good thing! Without further ado, I went straight to Hitler, told him the whole story and asked him to decide the issue. Hitler always hated it when he was faced with anything which he found irksome or embarrassing, and this time his scorn was directed against those who had denounced the child. If they had held their stupid tongues, no harm would have been done; as it was, although he did not interfere with my book, he felt he had to be logical and refuse to see the child any more. There are some people,' he told me, 'who have a positive genius for spoiling all my little pleasures!' So the book is not only rare, but these pictures along with Hoffmann’s story give a further insight into the man who was Adolf Hitler. The full name of the little girl and information is copyright material owned by Mr. Donald Boyle, who has the original pictures in his collection.

Book Olympia der Arbeit (Item YOUTH 6-8)

DESCRIPTION: This book, The Olympics of Labor; the Youth Labor Reich’s Vocational Contest is not a contest in the literal sense but rather it was a challenge to German youth to be the most upstanding, energetic, healthy in mind an spirit of all the young people in the world (and it almost succeeded). The book was put together by Arthur Axmann, who was next to Baldur von Schirach in leadership of the Hitler Youth and succeeded him as National Youth Leader. Before this he was chief of the social office of the HJ (Hitler Youth) and he was the director of the state (vocational) training and succeeded in raising the status of the Hitler Youth in agricultural and mechanical endeavors. He was a genuine war hero and was severely wounded in the eastern front, losing an arm. On 4 January he received the German Order, the highest decoration the NSDAP could award. The book is what we consider a treasure of what was and might have become, had fate been kinder. It shows in the first two pictures what German youth were like prior to the Kampfzeit and the NSDAP’s ascension to power, and then goes on to show the progress of the youth programs under the HJ. We will not elaborate further (they say a pictures is worth a thousand words). Look at the pictures. Except for a dozen pages of uplifting text the rest of the book is of just great professional black-and-white pictures with a clarity that is phenomenal. The book was printed in 1937 in Berlin. This is a magnificent record of the youth movement of “Aryandom.”

German-American Bund

Poster Jugendschaft (Item YOUTH 6-9; G-ABUND 1-2)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a small poster printed in the 1930s in Germany for the Deutscher-American Bund, the youth section, known as the Jugendschaft. Our historical advisor here at Germania has had them for years—50 or so—and received them directly from Bund members he personally knew in Buffalo, NY. Back in the 1950s and 1960s many of them were in the Jugendschaft of the organization. The poster shows the symbol of the Jugendschaft and there is an illustration of a young drummer boy with the traditional “Flame Drum” made popular by the Hitler Youth in Germany. These are 100-percent original posters from the era. They measures 9 x 12 inches. Originally they would have been for posting on walls, trees, etc., with words written under the figure that would announce work details, ceremonial events, marches, hiking, sports activities, etc. This is a rare youth item.

Book Von deutscher Art und deutscher Tat, Das Buch der Hitlerjugend (Item YOUTH 6-10; NSD 13-6)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a 168-page book that is chock full of great stuff. Its title is From the German Way and German Deeds, The Book of the Hitler Youth. This is a little ‘gem’ of a book for the student of the Kampfzeit (the power struggle). Most of the pictures are illustrations by Albert Reich, a well-known artist of posters and books in the Third Reich. The book was printed in the good year of 1935, by the Central Publishing Office of the NSDAP Franz Eher Verlag in Munich. The book is replete with the saga of Germany’s history from the victory in the Teutoburgerwald to the rise of the NSDAP and Hitler’s ascension to power. There are only four color illustrations, but they’re great ones, especially the one with the SA brown shirts marching in the spirit of Frederick the Great. This is indeed a rare publication. It’s 72 years old and still in great shape. It measures 8 x 10 inches and the former owner covered it in plastic years ago. You couldn’t find many more meaningful HJ volumes today. This is a German treasure!

Hitler Youth Winter Dress-Uniform Blouse (flying units) (Item YOUTH 6-11)

DESCRIPTION: The HJ winter uniform is very similar to the DJ uniform. The winter uniform is less regularly recognized than the summer wear one (the brown shirt and short pants). The winter blouse, or tunic, is blue and is worn with long trousers, but some of the younger boys still wore the shorts, even with this outfit. The blouse is of the pullover type with four buttons going down the front. The jacket, or blouse, has the pleated pockets and the numbers on the shoulder boards are ‘664.’ The Gebietsarmdreieck is the triangular patch above the armband that identifies the area that this HJ member is from. This particular unit was from South Württemberg (the Stuttgart area). The piping on the boards is light blue. This, according to good reference books, is the piping for HJ Fleiger Hitlerjend, or flight-training students of the Hitler Youth. This is indeed a rare time as the flight-connected arm was the smallest of the various departments of the HJ organization and certainly the most elite. Our information on this comes from actual HJ uniform charts republished in the book Youth Led by Youth, by Philip Baker.

Hitler Youth Knife marked with ‘RZM’ (Item YOUTH 6-12)

DESCRIPTION: This is a classic Hitler Youth knife of the type without the “Blut und Ehre” inscription. Blade is well used but all there. The grip is uncracked. The scabbard is deep black in color, possibly repainted, but back then 73 years ago or so. The scabbard strap is missing one of the strap retainers. In fact, the leather part that would contain the snap receiver is gone. Seldom do we encounter one of these knives in perfect condition as they were used by boys and although the discipline attached to these guys was far more stringent than other Boy Scout groups around the world the fact remains that this is a scouting knife and saw a lot of rough usage during the era. The knife is by Pumawerk (Lauterjung & Sohn) in Solingen. The ‘RZM’ code found at the ricasso or where the blade meets the cross guard is (RZM) M 7/27 1941. This identifies it as Puma. This is just a nice example of the Fahrtenmesser.

Hitler Youth Knife (Item YOUTH 6-12a)

DESCRIPTION: Here is another Fahrtenmesser, or Hitler Youth knife. This is without the “Blut und Ehre” inscription. It fits a bit loosely in the scabbard and it has some plating loss on the pommel and cross guard. The blade’s riccasso has no “RZM” mark. The carry strap is missing the snap strap entirely. It looks to have been permanently removed purposely. All in all at a cursory glance it would seem that the youngster who originally owned it might have envisioned himself as a “fast-draw” exponent??? Maybe he saw too many American westerns. The fact remains, however, that this is an authentic Hitler Youth knife and will fill an important niche in a Third Reich edged-weapon collection at a real bargain price.
