ROSENBURG BOOK PRESENTED TO HIMMLER (Item HH 1-2)

DESCRIPTION: This is a leather-bound copy of the book by Alfred Rosenburg, 1893-1946, a Reichleiter and editor of the Der Volkischer Beobachter and minister for the newly liberated territories in the east. He was generally accepted as the mentor of Nazi ideology. He believed in Nordic supremacy and his various books and papers sought to confirm these thoughts among the German populous. He wrote this book to praise and make immortal the deeds and philosophy of Ullrich von Hutten, a dashing knight, revolutionary, and poet of 700 years before the formation of the Third Reich. The book in unique form and specially bound was printed in 1938 at the Great Press at Mainz. This was the press of the Gutenberg Museum and was presented to Heinrich Himmler by the NS Teachers' Association in Gau Hessen Nassau during the New Year's period. It is hand signed or imprinted with the signature of the Gauwalter of the NS Lehrerbendes. The book measures 9" x 6" and is very thin; less than ¼" thick. A very rare article; prodigiously important in the archives of the Third Reich.

PRICE: $2,000

Heinrich Himmler Book (Item HH 1-3)

DESCRIPTION: These are two books with H. Himmler's signature on the front flyleaf. These books came with the Lebensbaum, the Rosenberg, and the Nuremberg pieces. We feel that these books belonged to the future Reichsführer- when he was a student. It is typical of his early signature, but also is very like his later one. Any handwriting expert can see that the signatures are old, and we guarantee it. The books were printed in 1847 and they are dictionaries of the German and French languages. They may have belonged to his father, but we do believe the signature to definitely be Heinrich's. The books both seem to be the same with 581 pages. They measure 8 x 5 ½ inches and are a little over an inch thick. For their age they are in remarkably good condition.

PRICE: $800 for both; $500 for one

Heinrich Himmler Dedication Dagger (Item HH 1-4)

DESCRIPTION: This is a classic example of the H. Himmler dedication dagger with the handwriting facsimile of the Reichsführer- on the blade. It has the ebony-colored grip which is identifiable as an Eickhorn production by its unique shape. The sigrune button has a copper tint (see Wittman's book, Exploring the Dress Daggers and Swords of the German SS). The eagle in the grip has the high neck often seen on Eickhorn products, but unlike many Eickhorn daggers, there are no noticeable gaps in the grip to cross guard fit. The Eickhorn squirrel is clear at the base of the blade. The dedication In Herzicher Kameradshaft H. Himmler is beautifully etched having a full black artificial patina applied to the distinctive presentation. The cross guard is benchmarked '5.' The patina of the motto on the front of the blade matches exactly with that of the Himmler dedication as it should. The anodized scabbard finish is fine and unscratched. The grip show the usual bumps and nicks of a dagger that was worn, but not abused. This is a textbook example according to Thomas Wittman and he has observed that these daggers were presented for, among other things, appreciation for the recipient's participation in the action of the night of the long knives. The putting down of the Ernst Röhm insurrection. This appears to be true since this dagger came to us through a family whose relatives included a man who took part in this scenario. We had his photo collection and this documented the purge against Röhm and his associates. This is practically the ultimate in an dagger and very sought after. Condition of the blade is near perfect. Overall condition extra fine.

Fantastic Himmler Presentation Book and Chest (Item HH 1-5)

DESCRIPTION: This is an incredible find. It is a cased presentation book to SS-Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler from the mayor and old city of Nuremberg. The case is most likely a project of the Hitler Youth; the center work being wonderfully and very professionally carved, while the eagles and swastikas that adorn the top framing are a bit more amateurish. But, the presenters were obviously cognizant of the Reichsführer’s love of Teutonic Volk Kunst (people’s art). His greatest passion was the re-creation of Germanic tribal art as was accomplished in the SS-Ahnenerbe organization. So, the H.J. workshop art as expressed here would be typical and expected. One of these books was presented in a similar case to Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday as noted inside, and it was engraved and drafted on parchment and pigskin with brail-type stamping and embossing. The writing was in calligraphy and the pages hand decorated. Obviously this original to the Führer was all hand done, while others were presented in printed form to high leaders of the SS, SA, and state. How many? This edition was presented to H. Himmler by the high mayor or Burgermeister, himself. This presentation can be seen on the first foreword page of the volume. The Reichsführer personally initialed it “HH” and dates it 31/1/40. The book consists of 44 pages of parchment-like material each page being an accurate copy of the calligraphy-executed, original work given to Hitler. The pages chronicle the praises bestowed upon Nuremberg’s sons and adopted sons like Adolf Hitler. The pages read like a who’s who of German and Nuremberg history: Kaiser Frederick II, Kaiser Karl IV, Goethe, Hans Sachs, Ludwig König von Bayern, Martin Luther, Richard Wagner, Ullrich von Hutten. Each merits a page or two. Then, at the end of the book, there are 7 highly decorative pages devoted to Nuremberg’s very favorite honorary citizen, Adolf Hitler. This beautiful book is covered in white leather or leatherette? It measures 12 ½ x 10 inches and the condition is excellent plus. Along the spine are the words in gilt or gold lettering Der Stadt der Reichsparteitage Nürnberg des Deutschen Reiches Schatzhaftlein, “The City of the Reich’s Party Rallies Nuremberg the German Reich’s Treasure Repository.” Inside on the foreword page it says the same and under this caption it says: “Words and Legends of 7 Hundred Years.” The cassette or chest measures 12 ¼ x 15 inches and from the top to the bottom of the stepped feet it measures 3 ½ inches. The hand-carved small, square, corner blocks of wood have raised individual carvings depicting runics and skull similar to the design of the Totenkopf Himmler honor ring. Besides the double Blitzsieg runes so familiar to the SS there is the Totenkopf or Death’s Head, which is a reminder of death before dishonor! Bottom left is the Hagel rune that takes the form of an asterisk inside a six-sided hexagon. This is a symbol of the inner strength of Aryan man to overcome all problems and adversity. At the right-lower corner is the dual sigrunes and tyrune. The tyrune had meaning to the ancient Germans and the Shutzstaffel for the bearer to be fearless and at all times true to the cause and Sippe (tribe). There is probably much more that could be said about this magnificent and vastly important relic, but we will let the pictures do their job. We can’t imagine many items of the Third Reich being more historically important than this great set.

Incredible Presentation Cigar Box to Heinrich Himmler (Item HH 1-6; SS 25-1b)

DESCRIPTION: Here is one of the finest of the presentation gifts we have ever seen that was given to Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. This chest emits the power and mythos of the SS like no other item we have ever seen in any collection worldwide. The historical importance is paramount. It was presented to Himmler as a birthday present on October 7, 1942, at his summer home in Lindenfycht-Gmund on the shore of beautiful Tegernsee in lower Bavaria. The man who presented this wonderful gift was Josias Erbprinz zu Waldeck und Pyrmont, who was a royal prince of the German monarchy, who was actually related to the Dutch and British Royal families. He was a Gruppenführer of SS Fulda-Werra at the time of this presentation. The headquarters of Fulda-Werra was in Arolsen near Waldeck. This was the Wehrkreis XI. It was a training area for the Shutzpolizei and SS Cavalry (Reiterstandarten). Fulda-Werra was the Oberabschnitt (SS higher command section). The title of Erbprinz in Waldeck’s name means hereditary prince and his membership that was early in the NSDAP was of great political value to the party in convincing other middle-class Germans and former aristocrats to abandon any dreams of reinstitution of the monarchy. He was born in the family castle in Arolsen in 1896. He was a nephew of Queen Wilhelmena of Holland. He served with distinction as a junior officer in WW I. He joined the NSDAP in 1929 and participated in the Putsch November 9 and earned the Blood Order. On the second of March 1930, he became a member of the SS serving first as an adjutant to Sepp Dietrich in Munich before subsequently becoming Himmler’s own chief of staff, and in September 1930, he was promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer (SS lieutenant general). He was also elected to serve as a member of the Reichstag in 1933 for the district of Dusseldorf-West. Because of a combination of merit and his valuable ties to the old aristocracy as formerly noted, Waldeck Pyrmont was promoted to the position of Hohrer-SS (senior SS) and became the police commander of the district of Kassel-Mainfranken in 1939. With the outbreak of the war in September, he was promoted to the rank of SS general and general of the Waffen-SS. Following the victory over Poland, he was tasked by Reichsführer Himmler with the mission of establishing what eventually became known as “The Bureau of Germanization of the Eastern Peoples,” which he ran from a headquarters that he established in Kassel for this purpose until the end of the war, while simultaneously performing his duties as the police commander and general of the Waffen-SS. After the war he was arrested by the allies and sentenced by an American military court to life imprisonment in August 1947. The first of the two charges against him was that while he definitely was never in command of it, the mere fact that the Buchenwald K.Z. (concentration camp) was located in his jurisdictional area and this very unjustly was considered sufficient evidence to hold him personally responsible for anything that might have happened there. Incidentally, it should be noted that Buchenwald was never identified as a “death camp” and that no such charges were laid against the prince. Ironically, the second of the two charges on which he was found guilty was that he ordered the execution of the camp commander of Buchenwald (Brigadeführer Koch) after it was discovered that Koch had disgraced both himself and the SS through his private use of convict labor to become a millionaire (sounds like U.S. prisons). In summary, he was “damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.” For reasons of poor health he was finally released from prison in 1950 and died in 1967 at the age 71. Like many other sagas of the turbulent era, his was a tale of royal splendor and then the defeat of his land, his family, the European continent, and ultimately , himself. We believe he was a rather noble gentleman who aspired to a better Europe and western world. Perhaps he trusted the wrong elements and acted rashly. Future history will surely judge this when the hate and lies finally succumb to historic investigation and revision. The chest is truly magnificent and as “Germanic as Germania.” The leering skulls of course are of the second type adopted by the SS and they are not cap devices. They are entirely handcrafted in silver as are the letters, as well those that are on some of the other corners. The LAH, also done by a silversmith, is of the later style; however, when Prince Waldeck was Himmler’s chief of staff, he would have been a Leibstandarte member and we believe this is a token of this former service. The “hh” is crafted in the style of the woodwork on the great chair of the Reichsführer to be seen on our pages. Click here to view. This came to be the style of Himmler’s initials as seen on many gifts and private purchases of the SS chief. The center has a circular motif with raised eagles and SS runes. The scroll in silver at the front of the chest has the legend that translates to: “To the Reichsführer-SS on his birthday at Lindenfycht-Gmund from Josias Erbprinz zu Waldeck, General of the SS Fulda-Werra. 10.7.1942.” The handles of the box are stag horn mounted in silver. The former owner-collector mounted a green felt pad inside the box on the bottom to improve the looks of the inside as the tin material necessary for the preservation of the cigars ins not exactly pretty. The key is missing, but is of the common nature and can be found in any key shop. We are busting our suspenders in pride with this one. Not much could be better both historically and in sheer Teutonic beauty. It measures 10 ½ inches long by 7 inches wide by 4 inches deep. The SS circle at the top is 2 ¾ in diameter. The silver scroll is 7 inches long and 1 ½ inches wide. Could there be better?
This chest was found in Arolsen with the other articles having once belonged to the prince. Why an item that was meant to be presented to the Reichsführer-SS was among the items ostensibly from the castle is historically baffling, and all types of speculation arises none of which bear any sort of proof. Did there come a time when a rift existed between the Prince and Himmler? Did Prince Waldeck decide not to send it? Did Himmler send it back reacting to a disagreement between the two men? We will probably never know for sure, but in any case this great chest stands on its own with its direct connection to this intriguing leading personality of the Third Reich and royal of the prestigious house of Waldeck.
