It is very dramatic and beautiful and it's a Dresden piece by Shrive Kister, one of the oldest and most prestigious of the hard-paste Dresden firms. It is a numbered edition signed by Zoll and numbered 10868. The condition is perfect throughout except the horse's reins are missing. They were often constructed of catgut and would have deteriorated and disappeared long ago. The piece looks like a 1930's production and depicts the officer mounted on his white steed in resplendent battle attire and is an elegant example of the hard-paste porcelain art of Dresden.

Ultra-fine Portrait of Frederick the Great (Der alte Fritz!) (Item FRED 2-5)

DESCRIPTION: This is a fine, printed edition of a studio portrait of Germany’s hero Frederick II of Prussia pictured at his fighting prime. This was the most famous of the pictures of “The Father of Prussian Militarism.” This was originally painted by Anton Graff famous artist of the 18th century. Born in Switzerland in 1736 in Winterthur, died 1833 in Dresden. He was the leading portrait painter of the period. He painted some 1,240 portraits in his long career. Besides the great and famous painting of Frederick, he painted such leading personalities as Lessing, Herder, Schiller, and many other dignitaries. The original portrait hung in the study of Adolf Hitler and he said that it gave him tremendous strength and inspiration. At the end (1945) it was in the bunker and when the Führer finally saw all was lost to the Kulturtragers, he presented this portrait to Hans Bauer, his trusted paladin and pilot who flew him all through the Reich in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Frau Bauer still has the priceless relic in her bank vault. This is a very nice little copy of the Graff portrait. It has the original rococo frame from the Third Reich period and the originally marked backing. There is a slip of paper attached which read translated: “Frederick the Great painted from life by Anton Graff.” There is also a label for a book and art dealer in Hannover. There is another label denoting that the frame is numbered 805/20 and the picture is #2796. More labels seem to give the impression that this is no ordinary print, but rather is perfect and the print has a dent and a scratch at about 9 o’clock and another high at 1 o’clock, almost out of sight. We are sure this is from the 1930’s or earlier. The picture by itself measures 8 x 10 ¼ inches. The frame is 11 is 13. This is the mandatory picture for all Germanophiles. The Alte Fritz wants you!
