Southwest Africa Commemorative Ashtray (Item GERCOL 1-1; WEHR 27-9)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a beautiful little ashtray that belonged to A. Ströhlein, who must have served in the German Southwest Africa Cavalry from 1904-1906. Along the edge are initials that work out to “Zur Erinnurung an mein Dienstzeit,” which translate to “In memory of my service time in Southwest Africa.” The ashtray is shaped and resembles a horseshoe and a miniature cavalry sword combine to demonstrate that this man was probably a Deutsche Reiter or cavalry officer. The piece is about 6 inches long and 4 1/4 inches wide. Two chips are slightly visible from the front. It’s very colorful and SWA items are extremely scarce. There are no company or maker’s marks. At this stage we will have to say this unique, possibly custom made for Herr or officer Ströhlein. It’s certainly a beautiful little 100-year-old piece of early kitsch-style art.

Souvenir Dish from German “Kamerun” (Cameroon) By Mustershutz (Item GERCOL 1-2 & KGLASS 3-8a)

DESCRIPTION: Musterschutz means patent protected and is seen on various important pieces of German porcelain and pottery pieces this one is possibly by Villeroy and Boch (Mettlach!). It is rather humorous as 3 darkie soldiers who are actually enlisted in the German army march past their white German officer. Kamerun or Cameroon was a German Protectorate in West Africa. The Imperial German Government made substantial investments in the infrastructure of Cameroon and the lot of the natives were 100% improved after 1884 when it became a German Colony. The black troops were called Askaris but the officers of the Schutztruppe or security troops were always white. The most famous of the German commanders was of course Paul Emil von Lettow- Vorbeck who led his
German landsers and his faithful Askaris in very successful Guerilla raids against the British in Kenya and Rhodesia. The dish is quite nice and in perfect shape; it measures about 5 inches square -- very colorful! Certainly rare and addresses a point in history that mostly is down the black memory hole.

Books: Die Uberseeische Deutschland (Sub-Title Die Deutschen Kolonien in Wort und Bild) (Item GERCOL 1-3)

DESCRIPTION: Here are some very rare magazines about the German colonies. We cannot find a date on them but it is fairly obvious that they are from the turn of the century and as late as 1914 or so. There are 19 of these magazines that measure 19 x 6 ½ and with about 36-40 pages, each filled with interesting pictures of life in these colonies, the people, the animals, the geography the politics, etc. They seem to be a running series because they are meant to be numbered from No.1 to 20 but there is one missing (No. 9). From the group and Number 20 is there, but a couple of the inner front pages are missing. These books were the property of the Press Department of Gau Westmark where there was obviously a geopolitical study group similar to the Ahnenerbe. Each issue has the stamp of this archival collection. The volumes were no doubt gathered for information sources that would help in press releases of the N.S Party and for research with the intent to publish scholarly works having to do with German colonies. The books are packaged in a folder that encases them.

PRICE: $350.00 for all 19 issues

N.S. Frauen Warte (2 August 1939) Magazine (Item GERCOL 1-5)

DESCRIPTION: This is a special issue of the Woman’s Magazine Frauen Warte. This issue is for the greatest part devoted to the German West African Colonies. At least 3/4ths of the content is on this subject and of course there are the usual fashion and recipe pages. There is an interesting map on the back cover that shows all the German colonies: Togo, Kamerun, German East Africa and German S.W. Africa. The cover of the issue shows a great colorful picture of the lads of the Pfadfinder des Horstes Windhoek -- the S.W. Africa equivalent of the Hitler Youth. They hold the standard of the organization. A great historical magazine and a must in any colonial collection.

DESCRIPTION: This is a hardbound 208 page book that explains much about the German pre-1945 colonies. Jam-packed with information about Germany’s Colonial Empire and the explorations and the subduing of various hostile populations that necessitated military force. The book was published in 1938 by a publishing house in Leipzig. The content is so vast in scope that we can give only a brief explanation. Its pages are filled with great black & white photography chronicling  the explorers, the heroes, the soldiers and civilians who worked and fought to bring civilization to the native peoples. Plus health and reasonable wealth to the indigenous peoples of these lands. Dramatic pictures such as the famed camel troops. The Deutscher Ritter, General Von Trotha and other historical notables. Pictures of the Pfadfinder boys and girls. This was the West African equivalent of the Hitler Youth. Much material on the medical and scientific staff of N.S. supported hospitals. The story of the famed General Ritter Von Epp and the infusion of National Socialist Policy in these colonies. For anyone to say that the native peoples were not greatly benefited by Germany would be ludicrous. This is a story of humanitarian virtue regardless of the opinions of any misinformed detractors. The book measures 9 ½ x 6 ½ and is in good condition with a little bit of scratches on the cover. Does not really detract from the otherwise practically immaculate condition.

One Year (1940) of Issues of Kolonie Und Heimat, The German Colonial Pictorial Monthly (Item GERCOL 1-7)

DESCRIPTION: This set certainly has to be extremely rare; it is a bound grouping of the entire year of 1940 of this important monthly magazine. We believe that if these important issues were not professionally bound they would not even be around anymore considering the fragile nature of newspaper stock. The contents of these pictorial pages are phenomenal! Natives, animals, along with positive propaganda of true nature along with dramatic pictorial accounts of fascinating history that abound in the thousands of pictures. The issues go from January 1940 to December 1940. In the first issue (January) there are many pictures of National Socialist leaders and Fascist Italian leaders in various perspectives as they appear at rallies, demonstrations and other events in the colonies and the homeland from Africa to the far east. The roles of the Hitler Youth and the N.S. political leaders are portrayed. The Germans admired the native peoples and many studies of their life and customs are recorded here in brilliant depth. Arabs are especially lauded and romantic scenes are produced in real life and in artistic depictions. Whole sections are devoted to the animals such as lions, apes, elephants, etc. and anti-British cartoons are found throughout the issues. There is much attention brought to bear on the war that was in its third year. We can’t begin to tell you about all the pictorial documentation that these wonderful issues contain. The Rome, Berlin, Tokyo Pact is covered along with the Italian misadventures in Africa that was really in the end the main reason that the Axis Powers lost the war and the struggle against Communism. Were it not for the unauthorized attacks by the Italians and Japanese, the Germans would have had that edge that would probably have spelled victory on the Eastern front and a just peace with the west. We could go on and on with this speculation but I personally as a historian believe Germany lost the 2nd World War due to the natural inclination of the Germanic people to trust and support their friends and Allies their motto and pledge was Unsere Ehre Heist Treue! (“Our Honor is Loyalty!”) Unfortunately they were too loyal to their partners who let them down with their dubious blatantly irresponsible geopolitical actions.

The book is huge -- 14 ½ inches by 16 inches and a full inch thick. The bound volumes are in very good shape as are all the pages within as well. The first issue January, 1940 has on the first page the official stamp of the Reichskolonialbund -- The Reichs Colonial Organization. For anyone who is interested in this rarely presented aspect of the once vast German Colonial Empire that was all stolen from them by “allied decree” after the war, this book is prodigiously invaluable.

DESCRIPTION: The year book of the organization of Germans outside the Reich (AO), this particular hard bound book is devoted to ocean travel, and the actual Kriegsmarine and various and pictures and explanations thereof. It was published by the AO organization's press section and is comprised of actual text and pictures regarding those subjects and their relationship to Germany’s colonial holdings. This edition is loaded with pictures of sailors, ships, ports, activities and voyages. It begins with pictures of Rudolf Hess and Gauleiter Bohle and works up into 448 pages of important text and pictures. The book measures 6 x 8 ½ and is an inch thick. Toward the back of the book are many advertisements for various machinery, other literature, ships cruises, shipping lines, cameras and binoculars, cars (including Mercedes Benz), tires by Semert, locomotives, and Mauser rifles. A book involving the activities of one of the most important sections of the Reich apparatus yet the least known about. A must for collectors of rare N.S. material. Pages are ever so slightly warped from age. There is a stamp inside the front cover that is from the AO within the HQ of the N.S. Party. Later when the National Socialists moved to the Braun House in Munich, the old HQ at the Tal 54 Sterneckerbrau was used as a book depository and that is where this volume was taken from in 1945 by the looters. The same with the volume listed below.

Book: Jahrbuch der Auslands Organization Der NSDAP (AO) (Item GERCOL 1-10)

DESCRIPTION: This translates to the yearbook of the organization of Germans living outside the Reich published by the N.S. Party. It is largely like the volume shown above except this one instead of being on sea travel, it is a general coverage of the advances to civilization fostered by the N.S. Party and the various parts and military functions within the workings of the agenda. Many pictures of civilian workers, solders, Hitler Youth, airmen, factories, the autobahn, farming, health and sanitation. It opens with a picture of Adolf Hitler and then Rudolf Hess and Gauletier Bohle, the president of the AO. It is replete with advertisements from many companies that are still known today -- such as Ford, Mercedes, Mauser, Deutsche Bank, Continental Tires, Telefunken, Dresdener Bank, Messerschmitt, and Adlerwerk. The subjects are supported by brilliant black and white pictures. The pages are just filled with historic importance in text and pictures. The pages are a bit warped from age and poor storage but not badly and this does not in our mind detract from the overall good condition and overall importance, even the dust covers on these books are in quite reasonably good shape.

DESCRIPTION: This is a very rare pass for a member named Franz Josef Kaussen in the city of Aachen on the Rhine. It bears the symbol of the Ausland organization. It is the mandatory booklet that one would paste their dues stamps in and this one is quite full. This member's number was 18547 and along with this pay book is his membership badge. The booklet is measured at 3 inches by 4 ½ and clearly says MitgliedsKarte (membership card). It has the official stamp of the organization at the bottom corner of the pass and the facsimile signature of Franz Ritter Von Epp, the high leader of the organization. The membership pin that is included with the package is quite beautiful -- perhaps the prettiest of all the N.S. organizational pins, it depicts a silver Reich’s eagle perched upon the shield that is accomplished with enameled sections in three different colors. On its back is the patent protection (ges gesch) and an FBH logo; it measures almost one inch high and is quite dramatically inspiring when viewed. The articles were purchased from a surviving relative. There was also a letterhead paper from the organization that also has the logo of the Kolonialbund. And an interesting little paper sticker that would attach to papers or perhaps to an automobile window. It measures about 2 inches high and an inch across. This is a great historical group from one of the most interesting inner organizations of the Third Reich. Seldom seen!

PRICE: $295.00 for the four pieces.

Next there is a picture of Von Epp in his resplendent uniform. One fourth of the book is a calendar with space for entries and notes at the bottom chronicling important events in German history that occurred on various dates throughout the year. The book measures 4 ¼ inches by 6 ½ inches. It is in beautiful, immaculate condition with a great linen cover binding with the symbol of the colonial organization on its cover. This is an extremely rare article in Third Reich relics and in our long experience it is the only one we have ever heard of being offered, and has 196 pages with a wealth of information. Probably the best of the books that we offer among the Colonial items.

Colonial Banner
Here is Franz Ritter von Epp opening a school for colonialism in 1938

Banner of the Reichskolonialbund (Reichs Colonial League) (Item GERCOL 1-18; FLAG 4-11)

DESCRIPTION:  This is an extremely rare ensign of that collective body that absorbed all German colonial organizations during the Third Reich. It was led by the illustrious German hero Franz Ritter von Epp, who formed and led the Freikorps von Epp, which was the most effective and militaristic of the rightwing paramilitary units which literally saved the Fatherland from a total communist takeover in the 1920s. These ex-WWI soldiers were responsible for the crushing of the Bavarian Soviet Republic in Munich. Epp became a member of the German Parliament in 1928 and was later appointed as the leader of the German Colonial Society (Reichskolonialbund), the organization that was devoted to regaining Germany’s lost colonies. The organization had its own youth organization, the Colonial Youth, and was incorporated as a wing of the Hitler Youth. These boys and girls were tutored in patriotism and true German values as pertained to the NSDAP organization outside the Reich, itself. The flag that was adopted was modeled after the German East Africa Company with the addition of the swastika.

The Banner

Actually, this is a podium banner of the type that you see in our image of Ritter von Epp as he speaks to assembled N.S. political leaders in 1938. It measures 39 x 49 inches and is in good to fair condition. Around the central design there is a framework of almost iridescent-gold matting. This matting is interrupted by a break now and then where it is slightly torn away or has some holes, but honestly, the extreme rarity of this piece pretty much excuses the “age wounds.” It still will be a welcome addition to the collection of a flag appreciator. Yes, there are some folds and creases from being stored away for so many decades (77 years or so!); however, we feel that this is one of the rarest banners we have ever offered. How many could there possibly be around today?

DESCRIPTION:  Recently, we had the good fortune to acquire a magnificent Imperial Eagle plaque. We bought it from a gentleman in South Africa. Recent research has suggested that this gorgeous plaque undoubtedly was from the German West Africa official embassy. German West Africa existed as a German colony between 1884 and 1919. The plaque is constructed in extremely high intense relief. It measures 7 inches in diameter and is quite heavy. Two holes on either side of the plaque at three o’clock and nine o’clock indicate that is was once a door plaque. We believe it is cast in bronze and then heavily silver plated. The detail is so great that one could distinguish each line of the feathers. The eagle is decorated with the prestigious Black Eagle Order around its neck. In the center, you can see the familiar smaller eagle of the Prussian state under Wilhelm I. The main eagle is surmounted by the Prussian Royal Crown. Even the Black Eagle Order is clearly distinguishable as one views this wonderful plaque. This is surely one of the rarest Imperial relics that we have ever had the pleasure of purchasing. Surely, it is an extremely unusual Imperial treasure.
