Main Gauche (Left Handed Dagger ) (Item EDGE 1-1)

DESCRIPTION: In sword fighting the Main Gauche is a dagger used in the off-hand, mainly to assist in parrying incoming thrusts, while the dominant hand wields a rapier or similar longer weapon intended for one handed use  It may also be used for attack if the opportunity arises. The name is from the French for left hand. Thus it was called in English a ‘left handed dueling dagger.’  This was its stated purpose but they were often worn as a singular defensive weapon without sword by men of all walks of medieval life from commoners that could afford them or make them to noble knights and men at arms. The one we offer here is complete with a clamshell style guard that goes far to protect the hand in close combat, but it also was handy from time to time when it could catch the blade of the opponents sword thereby leaving him momentarily defenseless as the swordsman (good guy or bad guy) dispatches him with his rapier (R.I.P.).  There was a time in the Victorian Era (early 1830’s to the turn of the century) when many early medieval style edged weapons were once again produced. It takes a true expert to look at such a weapon with an eye to determining if such an object of mayhem is from the 16th century or might be a Victorian re-creation. Some of these items were made to grace the walls of castles and banquet halls in great and stately mansions in England, France and Germany. We are not really such experts. All we know is when rarely such a dagger like this one (hand-wrought) shows up and titillates our fancy then it must be bought and offered to our collectors who have our appreciated efforts in gathering such wonderful lethal treasures from all over the world.  So, we leave it up to the collectors and our museum customers to make their determinations as to the age but rest assured the items are not new! This one is 18 inches long altogether with a 12 inch blade. The grip is wire wrapped with braided steel bands top and bottom it has the typical elongated ball pommel and the cross guard has the upward and downward sweep typical of Germanic daggers and swords. The lethal blade is marked with a crusader style cross stamp just above the guard.  All in all, a handsome piece that would look great on your wall or shoved in your belt when you go out to do battle with the Black Prince.

PRICE: $1,850.00
