Shooting Prize for Africa Corps (Rommel) (Item WEHR 21-1)

DESCRIPTION: This is in the style of the wooden targets used by the German Army and the custom was that the Schützenkönig, or top-scoring competitor, would receive the target as his prize. See Item WEHR 13-7. The same tradition was used by civilian marksmanship clubs, as well. See Item HUNT 6-3. This is the top prize of all of them in our estimation. It is historically important and it is obvious no one would shoot at this one as it is not only hand painted, but is historically important in that the great and beloved Field Marshal Rommel is depicted with a couple of his Africa Corps officers. The scene is the Battle of Tobruk, where the Italians had to call in the German forces of the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions to save them from the British 7th Armour Division, which under the brilliant command of Rommel, drove the British back across Cyrenecia to Tobruk laying siege to it until June 21, 1942, when the allied forces surrendered, to include the Australian 9th Division, which fought with bravery and tenacity, but unfortunately spilling their blood for the British warmongers. The plaque that can be called a target through the tradition although not shot at is huge; much bigger than the usual one encountered. They would not shoot at a target containing the picture of the beloved”Desert Fox.” This is most definitely a great relic of the war upon the sands and a tribute to a gentleman soldier who will live in fame and glory as long as heroes are revered.

Group of Africa Corps Pictures with Card Signed by Rommel (Item WEHR 21-2)

DESCRIPTION: This is a page from a German soldier’s photo album. There are 3 photos measuring 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches and one that is 4 x 3 inches with scenes of duty in the African wastes. One of them is rather neat with the Africa Corps men trying to get a stubborn camel to get to his feet for duty. Another is a birthday party in Tobruk, another shows the album owner in full uniform, while the last photo is a conference of officers, but the big picture is a postcard souvenir in the type soldiers sent home and this soldier managed to get the signature of the commandant himself, Rommel. The signatures of the general are extremely rare and this one combined with these great Africa Corps photos makes for a fine historically important archival find.

Book in the Frauenschaft, Mit Hitler im Westen; Special Presentation of H. Hoffmann (Item WEHR 21-4; AH 17-2; NSD 12-2)

DESCRIPTION: With a special foreword by the martyred General Field Marshal Keitel, this is a spectacular Hoffmann pictorial on the first campaigns of the Second World War. It also is special because it was a presentation for true and diligent work performed by Mrs. Emma Herrmanns, who was a block-woman’s leader in the NS Fraunschaft, the women’s division of the party. It was presented for her five years’ service in the Gau (section) Magdeburg Anhalt and has the facsimile signature of the Frauenschaft leader on the presentation page. There is a quote from Adolf Hitler about the necessary and appreciated work of the Deutsches Frau und Fraulein for Germany and the German people. Like many of the Hoffmann series the pages are not numbered, but there are hundreds of examples of his great, incomparable photography. In side are leaders, combat, soldiers, airmen, tanks, planes, general, officers, fighting soldiers, captured enemy, victory parades, celebrations, and the French surrender in the famed railway car at Compiegne, Hitler’s celebrated visit to Paris, and Napoleon’s tomb are there. Also, there’s a great picture of the victorious German Wehrmacht marching around the Arc d’Triumph because Hitler ordered them not to march through it because it would embarrass the French military and civilians. He also arranged for the casket of the Duc du Reichstadt, the son of Napoleon, to be returned to France to lie in state beside his father after successive kings and emperors in Austria had for centuries refused to do this claiming he was a member of the Austrian nobility. (Hitler fulfilled the wishes of Bonaparte because, after all, this was his son.) All in all, this 10-x-7-1/2-inch book is a truly valuable archival treasure. It is in the deluxe hard-cover version with black, tough, linen-style binding that is in beautiful shape.

Book Der grosse deutsche Feldzug gegen Polen (Item WEHR 21-6)

DESCRIPTION: Here is chronicle of battle in words and pictures that is an absolutely mint-condition WWII book that is both important and beautiful. This is the historic record of the German Anslaut in the wake of Polish atrocities against the German minority in Poland and the warlike obvious intentions of the Polish government. The book is in mint condition because, since 1940 (66 years ago), it has been stored within the box that accompanies it and an original dust cover has preserved it, as well. The foreword to the book was written by General Feldmarschall von Reichenau. The book is filled to ultimate capacity with grand pictures of the campaign; dramatic and inspiring as the powerful Wehrmacht smashes the once-arrogant Polish forces. Maps show the Polish plan of attack against Germany that was to go into affect in 1939 and the German counterattack successfully carried out. The pictures are remarkably clear and sharp. The German soldier is portrayed as he was—the most excellently trained fighting man in the world—with courage personified. The Landsers press their mission forward through smoke and fire. There are pictures of the Führer, generals, troop movements, naval operations, the Luftwaffe, Polish prisoners, infantry companies, artillery emplacements, tanks, Stukas, etc. They don’t come better. This is a vastly important volume and in mint condition.

WWII-era Zimmerschützen Target Pistol (Item WEHR 21-9; NSD 12-3; OLY 6-14)

DESCRIPTION: This is a German parlor pistol or Zimmerschützen. This was a special target pistol used in competition matches for many years in Germany. This particular one has a number code of 100 and the compulsory ‘DRGM’ and the Nazi-style eagle over the ‘N.’ This is the Waffenampt for post-1940 guns made in the Third Reich. These pistols were fitted so that when the hand was inserted into the grips it was like you were just fitted with an artificial arm. You snuggle your hand into a fitted wooden stock that is usually hand-fitted to you so that the firearm feels like it is an actual extension of your arm and hand. This one was made for a right-handed shooter. It has a front stock like a rifle in case the particular match allowed additional stability shooting, but usually the matches were standing freehand. This one has a rolling-block action. It is chambered for .22-caliber, long-rifle ammunition. It has a safety—the upper lever—and it has another lever to set the trigger so sensitive as to set it off by a human hair applied to it, thus the term ‘hair trigger.’ This pistol is in great condition with bluing at 99 percent, and the wood 100 percent. At the bottom of the grip is the cocking lever. When this is pulled the action drops exposing the open breech for the cartridge to be inserted. After firing, a pull on the grip lever will extract the spent cartridge. This is a consignment item and the gun will be sent U.S. only with all legal restrictions observed and through a registered licensed dealer only. It is indeed a rare Third Reich relic, but also a firearm and must be treated and sold as such. Pistols similar to these were used in the 1936 Olympic Games by the top-place German winners.

Book Sprung über Kreta (Item WEHR 21-10; LUFT 12-4)

DESCRIPTION: This book of 147 pages is a pictorial record of a victory of the German paratroopers in WWII. Costly it was and because of the inordinate casualties Hitler ordered that never again such an airborne assault would be attempted. Still, these elite warriors from above will be remembered whenever the songs of glory are heard; even today, sung by the noble, and hated by the liberals and leftists in the Germany of today. The Battle for Crete (Operation Merkur) was in May 1941. The operation was successful in terms of taking the island, but the cost in valuable young lives was appalling—more 6,000 paratroopers were killed. Among the dead was a trio of brothers who were direct descendants of the famous Marshall Blücher of Waterloo fame. One of them was murdered by member of the famed Black Watch Regiment. This was one of the group’s that historically were saved by Blücher’s Prussians at Waterloo. Isn’t it strange how fratricidal war works? The book measures 8 x 10 inches and is in good shape except for the binding and spine. This is tattered at bit, but holding well. This volume could be considered a memoriam to the bravery of the Deutsche Fallschirmjäger Corps; a breed of heroes that we will never see again. “Red Shines the Sun!” (the paratrooper song)
