Field Chess Set (Item WEHR 12-1)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a practically unique item at least because in our many years in this field this is the first time we have ever seen or heard of one. It is a chess set made completely of hard cardboard and is packed with a Feldpost box as sent to soldiers at the front. It is complete with the chess pieces and board and it is just as it would be sent to Fritz or Hans by Volk who wished to have these noble fighters receive something thoughtful from the Deutsche Vaterland, while fighting for them. This is neat as all get out! and certainly a great addition to the collection of Wehrmacht items.

Deutsche Afrika Korps Tank Insignia (Item WEHR 12-2)

DESCRIPTION: This is an unusual item from the famous Africa Corps. It is a cloth tank insignia that is quite large measuring 28 x 43 inches. It is dramatic indeed, with the palm tree and swastika motif in its center. This probably was an identification item that identified an A.K. tank or other mechanized vehicle. It is certainly a rare item. This is an appliqué item composed of several machine-sewn applications of various sections. It also may have been a Korpgeist item used at functions such as bestowing medals or celebrations over various victories in the desert. A really trophy of the war in the dunes. It's made from a sturdy canvas material.

Captured Polish Sword (Item WEHR 12-3)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a very old Polish sword (cutlass) that was a soldier's souvenir of WW II. This is the typical Polish Ulan style with long, slim, curved blade and Cossack-style grip. It's 35 inches long altogether with the blade section being 30 inches and 1 ¼ inches wide at the top widest point. The grip is covered in black leather. There is quite a bit of hand engraving of arms, sun symbols, Jerusalem crosses, double-headed eagle, crown, and on each side a uniformed figure bearing a sheathed sword and wearing a turban-style headgear. There are also the words 'Vivat Pandi.' There are also 'x' marks along the spine of backside. The woman whom we received it from told us her husband, who was in the Panzar Lehr Division, brought it home when on leave in 1943 and said it was found in a Polish Cavalry museum maintained by the Polish government. It was found there by a Russian who fought on the German side and he, in turn, traded it to the German soldier for some tinned foodstuffs. It can be considered quite rare and should once more become a museum piece!

Fine Engraved Dress Bayonet (Item WEHR 12-7)

DESCRIPTION: Here is the shorter version dress bayonet of the German Army. This is the one with the fine eagles top and bottom of the inscription “Zur Erinnerung and Meine Diesntzeit,” (In Memory of My Service Time.) The piece is by Carl Eickorn of Solingen. The blade is in very fine condition except for a little flaking at the section joining the cross guard. The grip plastic is fine and intact. The nickel plating is average darkened. The scabbard is also average, but undented-shows wear at the pint where the frog has rubbed against it. The leather frog is in good but used shape (stitching intact). Yes, this is a bayonet that shows use, but is still in very good collectible shape for an uncommon piece.

Reichswehr Stickpin (Item WEHR 12-8)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a really neat pin from the Reichswehr. The colors are indicative of the Anhalt Freikorp and later, the Anhalt Reichswehr forces. The leering skull is the best we have ever seen (better than on most Totenkopf rings). The dates refer to the dragoons of Anhalt in the Franco-Prussian War and 1930 is 3 years before amalgamation of the Reichswehr into the Wehrmacht in 1933. The saying is strange and must be for an elite group within the Reichswehr “Rauberhohle” or robber’s hell or hole. It also says “Freiburg BR” “BR” equals Bruke? (bridge). Perhaps it commemorates a battle. It is signed “Wiedtemann & Co. Freiburg BRSG” on the back. We are stumped! But we realize the beauty of the piece and assume it’s rare. Nicest stickpin we ever saw.

Book Wir tragen stolz das Edelweiss, We Proudly Carry the Edelweiss (Item WEHR 12-9)

DESCRIPTION: This is a pictorial book on Germany’s Gebirgsjägers (Mountain Troopers). It comprises 85 pages of mainly incredible pictures of these elite, tough troops. The photography is beyond belief for detail and depth. This will be a treasure for any collector of “special unit” items, or for any archivist who gathers the extremely rare action books of World War II. In 42 years the Germania staff has only occasioned to see one other copy of this book. It was published by the Belser Verlag in Stuttgart in 1941. The foreword is by General of Infantry Kubler, the commander of the mountain division by his name. The book measures 8 ½ x 11 inches. The inside pages and pictures are in excellent condition, but the paper cover is a bit tattered and taped here and there. This must be expected in a 1941 soft-cover book. This piece is rare and important.

PRICE: $195.00   (We just received another one in fine condition; price, $250.00)

Book Hindenburg (Item WEHR 12-10; NSD 5-5)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a great (large) book published in 1935 to commemorate the passing of the great Paul von Hindenburg, General Field Marshall and Reich’s President of the Greater German Reich that he managed to hold together until the coming to power of Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP. This man was a warrior personified and a noble gentleman at the same time. He was Germany before the Führer and contrary to the usual tommyrot propaganda, he very much favored the Austrian corporal and thought he was the only hope for a united Germany and the man who could save the Vaterland from communist overthrow and domination. The book is replete with pictures from the military and political career of this Teutonic giant of military prowess and glory. This is a big book measuring 10 x 14 inches and comprises 95 pages and it is in remarkably good shape. This is a great addition to any political or military collection. This is a real historic treasure!

Book Der Grosse Befehl (The Great Directive (or Order)) (Item WEHR 12-11)

DESCRIPTION: This is a great soft-cover book put together by Heinrich Hoffmann (Reichsbildberichterstatter), official Reich photographer. It was published in 1940 during the height of the second year of WW II in Europe. Hundreds of clear, dramatic pictures of the soldiers, combat, victories, leaders, big guns, meetings with officials, the Führer, and Reichsmarschall Göring at the front are included. This is a great archival photo collection of the fight for Europe as envisioned by German perspective. All the glory, sadness, and resolve is summed up in these pages like no other book of its time. Presented under the official auspices of Die Oberkommandos der Wehrmacht (Supreme Command of the Army) with a foreword by General Field Marshall and Chief of the OKW Keitel. Wonderful photo reference.
