Original Reichskriegsfahne; Tattered, but Proud (Item FLAG 4-1)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a good-sized war flag that was torn from a flagpole by a German soldier in Berlin at the Wehrmacht headquarters. He did this at the last minute thus exposing his life to danger! He was a patriotic soldier and he did this as a token of loyalty to his creed and devotion to the cause. He did not want to see this symbol of past glories fall into the hands of the Mongol hordes set loose from Hell that had destroyed the beautiful German capital. He knew he would not be able to carry a flagpole along in his escape so he tore the flag away from its mount thereby ripping it away from its bunting edge. So, what’s left is a war flag without the sailcloth-type edging to which one secured the rope that supported the attachment to the pole. So, what’s offered here is definitely an authentic Reichskriegsflagge taken in battle and the price is far less than one that would be in mint shape as the one listed below. Therefore, if it is the symbolism you seek, here is the real thing: tattered, but still proud with martial glory in its past. The size is 93 x 58 inches and you can see in our attached images that the bunting is missing and there are a few small rips and holes. These really do not detract from the flag’s overall dramatic appearance. This is truly a bargain at:

Mint-Condition, Large Battleship Reichskriegsflagge (Item FLAG 4-2)

DESCRIPTION: Here is without a doubt the finest German war flag we have ever seen. It’s in mint condition throughout, and is of the size used on battleships of the Kriegsmarine. It has all the proper Kriegsmarine markings to include eagle and swastika and the (“M”) for Marine (Navy). It also says “LOH. KR-FL. 200 x 335” (German size). It has, of course, within the edge bunting the rope ties for securing it to the flagpole. This being battleship size is 128 x 58 inches (BIG!). Seldom does a flag as great as this one come along and as wonderfully marked. If you have the wall space that would accommodate this beauty, I would highly recommend it. Remember, this flag represents the valiant struggle of the German nation’s gallant soldiers, airmen, and sailors against the evil forces of international Bolshevism that short of the efforts by these brave warriors, horrific barbarism would have successfully conquered every European country. “Halten Sie die Fahne Hoch!“

Reichskriegsflagge der Deutschen Kriegsmarine (Item FLAG 4-3)

DESCRIPTION: This is a particularly nice German war flag nicely marked in the bunting with the eagle and swastika and (M) for Marine (Navy). It also has the partially faded out words Deutsche Kriegsflagge and the German size 15 x 25. We forgot to show these markings in the images, but they are there in the bunting edge. There are no noticeable holes and is in very nice condition overall. It has the lanyard rope ties and is a very nice representative war flag. It measures 91 x 59 inches. These are drying up and you don’t even see them at gun and military shows as we used to; I suggest you buy it now!

Fine Condition (Labeled) Party Flag of the NSDAP (Item FLAG 4-4)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a little charmer! This is the official flag used by NS patriots—the type hung out over window sills as the many parades by party functionaries and military personnel paraded by in every little town and hamlet. So great was the reception of Hitler’s organization that the people were overjoyed to participate in celebrating the “Machtergreifung” (seizure of power). The size is 23 x 28 inches and is double-sided. This one has the original manufacturer’s label that says “Flaggenfabrik Alstedstedt & Hornung Hamburg.

Huge National Socialist Party Banner (Item FLAG 4-5)

DESCRIPTION: This one measures 147 x 43 inches and is in great condition with no noticeable holes. This is double-sided and is typical of the street and building flags that with their bright colors proclaimed the majesty of the Third Reich’s “Machtergreifung,” the ascension to power that culminated in Adolf Hitler’s being appointed Reich’s chancellor in 1933. Many of the various German cities blanketed their streets with such banners to celebrate this event and many other festive holidays in the Reich. This is a huge banner and in great condition except for one small rip about 3 inches long completely and easily repairable. It measures more than 12 feet long is more than 3 feet wide.

DESCRIPTION: Here is another (double-sided) banner of the NSDAP (Nazi Party) of the type that was hung at party rallies and decorated all the German streets after Hitler’s ascension to power in 1933 (National Socialist “Machtergreifung”). This one measures 10 feet x 38 inches (Big!) with no moth holes apparent. This is a genuine Third Reich flag in the condition that you would no doubt desire; just as nice as they ever come. Small National Socialist Flag in Mint Condition (Item FLAG 4-7)

DESCRIPTION: This could even be a podium banner although it is double sided and that usually denotes a flag. But it also goes to prove it is original. So far, reproductions have all been single sided and they never seem to have that special cloth and color of the originals. This one is near mint in condition and is the size that has been the preference of most WWII collectors—nice, but not overbearing. This one measures 37 x 30 inches and is a textbook wall flag to back up your collection as they are a perfect background for your medals or in a general collections. The white field with the swastika is separately and expertly adhered to the red field. This is one of the finest conditioned flags I have and the pleasure to have purchased, and these are getting very scarce today.

Kriegsfahne (War Flag) (Item FLAG 4-8; KRIEG 10-16)

DESCRIPTION:  Here in mint condition is a small Kriegsfahne in the size that all collectors seek: 3 x 21 inches. This is the size that displays best in a collection. The Kriegsfahne is the most collectible of all Third Reich flags and often the most difficult one to find in good size and condition. This one is exceptional and has written in its bunting end the word “REICHSKRIEGSFAHNE.” It has its intact lanyard and loop end. They don’t come better! Throughout our site under flags, you will see others that were sold in various sizes and there are explanations as to their usage. Some were made exclusively for the navy, but the war flag was used by all branches of the Wehrmacht. These sell quickly: don’t hesitate!

 Reichskriegs Flag (Item FLAG 4-10)

DESCRIPTION:  Here is a genuine Reichskriegs flag in size 66 x 39 which is the most desirable size sought by collectors. This one has an unusual mounting feature with an edge bunting that has a cloth loop at each end that opens to receive the flagpole. Keep in mind that this is a 100-percent original WWII German war flag and it evidently went to war because it has several little “nips” at the quarter where it would beat against the flagpole when it would be flying in a brisk wind. If you like relics that actually saw service then this one is it! Regardless of its few holes it is still the proud Kriegs flag used by the army, navy, and other branches of the Deutschen Wehrmacht. I’d have to say it’s a good example of a flag that gets ever more scarce by the year. Better grab it now!

Banner of the Reichskolonialbund (Reichs Colonial League) (Item FLAG 4-11; GERCOL 1-18)

DESCRIPTION:  This is an extremely rare ensign of that collective body that absorbed all German colonial organizations during the Third Reich. It was led by the illustrious German hero Franz Ritter von Epp, who formed and led the Freikorps von Epp, which was the most effective and militaristic of the rightwing paramilitary units which literally saved the Fatherland from a total communist takeover in the 1920s. These ex-WWI soldiers were responsible for the crushing of the Bavarian Soviet Republic in Munich. Epp became a member of the German Parliament in 1928 and was later appointed as the leader of the German Colonial Society (Reichskolonialbund), the organization that was devoted to regaining Germany’s lost colonies. The organization had its own youth organization, the Colonial Youth, and was incorporated as a wing of the Hitler Youth. These boys and girls were tutored in patriotism and true German values as pertained to the NSDAP organization outside the Reich, itself. The flag that was adopted was modeled after the German East Africa Company with the addition of the swastika.

The Banner

Actually, this is a podium banner of the type that you see in our image of Ritter von Epp as he speaks to assembled N.S. political leaders in 1938. It measures 39 x 49 inches and is in good to fair condition. Around the central design there is a framework of almost iridescent-gold matting. This matting is interrupted by a break now and then where it is slightly torn away or has some holes, but honestly, the extreme rarity of this piece pretty much excuses the “age wounds.” It still will be a welcome addition to the collection of a flag appreciator. Yes, there are some folds and creases from being stored away for so many decades (77 years or so!); however, we feel that this is one of the rarest banners we have ever offered. How many could there possibly be around today?

Third Reich Veterans’ Schellenbaum Top (Item FLAG 4-12; VETS 2-13)

DESCRIPTION: Here is one of the Shellenbaum pole tops that were the first types used in the late 1920s by the Kyfhauserbund and other veterans’ organizations that were formed by ex-soldiers of the First World War. These men were highly respected and celebrated by the German populace and by the National Socialist government and the Führer Adolf Hitler. The finial is for either a flagpole top or a top for a Schellenbaum. This was one of the most characteristic and instantly recognizable features of the German military band. It was often referred to as the “Jingling Johnny.” The Schellenbaum began its life as an actual musical instrument that could be shaken and rattled in percussive fashion—somewhat reminiscent of the standards carried by the ancient Roman legions. It gradually through the ages evolved to carry a small banner at its top and so became the symbol of the particular group or unit that carried it and represented the command of the military formations it identified. No longer emitting musical sounds when the armies marched it now was considered the standard motif, but eminent in regal dignity. This one being a very early example looks much like the Schellenbaum type that graced the elite Kaiser Guard formations such as the Gardes du Corps or the Garde Grenadiers. In fact, it may even have been such, and the swastika as seen in our images may well have been added after the National Socialist Machtergreifung (Ascension to Power in 1933). Schellenbäume were often bought by the local townsfolk near the unit’s garrison and given to the band to cement the bond between the military bandsmen and the local population. It is essentially a Germanic tradition, and to find an antiquated one such as this is very fortunate indeed. The piece measures a little over 12 inches high and is about 5 inches wide at its widest point. It is all brass and quite ornate in its design with a musical harp as its central design surrounded by floral motif. It is an impressive piece of Teutonic history.

Reichskriegsflagge (Item FLAG 4-13)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a genuine German war flag in size 8 feet x 4 1/2 feet big, but still a nice display piece for your collection. It’s in pretty-nice condition and has very desirable markings. These flags were used by all branches of the Deutschen Wehrmacht—army, air force, and navy—but the largest use was with the Kriegsmarine (navy) and they were flown on all ships of the wartime navy. This one is marked with the German size on the rope end bunting and the company of manufacture or company handling them is also seen, but most important is the tiny eagle and letter “M” for “Marine” (navy) and this assures us that this flag was used on a ship—U-boat or cruiser? The flag is in nice condition with a few minor holes that do not really detract at all. It has the lanyard complete. They just don’t come much better than this beauty! Be advised, some fairly good copies are being produced in Pakistan.

Reichskriegsflagge (Item FLAG 4-14)

DESCRIPTION: This is a genuine German war flag of WWII vintage. It measures 28 x 51 inches and is just as nice a one that you would ever find (practically mint) size. This size is that most desired by collectors. It has its two lanyard loops and the bunting end has the letters printed that work out to be “Kr.fl. 80 x 135” and it has the manufacturing company name on it as well: “Lorenz Summan Söhne Oberkotzau” and that is printed on the bunting, as well. These flags were once plentiful at the war’s tragic end, but now collectors find them to be quite scarce, especially in the condition of this one. Better grab it collectors; this is the essential collector’s piece for a WWII or German war-relic collection. It’s the best you will ever see!

Reichs War Flag; 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 Feet (Item FLAG 4-14a)

DESCRIPTION: Here is the most popular-sized Reichskriegsfahne for the particular collector. This one is practically mint, as far as condition; they really don’t come better. Flags of this size are sought after more than any other. This one has the manufacturer’s name—Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik— and the size in German dimensions. It also has the initials “Kr.Fl.” which stand for Kriegsflagge (war flag). The flag described above we have said is the “best you will ever see.” Now we must revise that statement and say that this one is amazingly just as fine, in fact maybe even a little bit better! Fine NSDAP Party Flag in Desirable Size (Item FLAG 4-14b)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a nice, clean, fringed party flag that may be a type of N.S. standard. It has fine silver fringe around three sides, while one side is made to attach to a pole or standard fitting. This piece measures 4 x 3 feet and is double sided and that makes it an actual flag, not a podium banner. It is 100-percent original and a choice example of an NSDAP ensign. The white area on each side remains clean without the usual stains that appear on 90 percent of these 85-year-old pieces. There are three dime-sized, faded-out mini stains at about 1:00 to the swastika, but they are so utterly minute that they won’t even pick up with the camera. This is one of the cleanest party flags we have seen in many years.
