Autograph of General Ludendorf (Item KPHOTO 2-1)

DESCRIPTION: This is a signed picture of the famous WWI hero who, with von Hindenburg, smashed the Russian forces at Tannenberg and other places that now are the historic saga of the German nation. Later, the old warrior felt the magnetic pull of Nazism and joined with Hitler prior to the November 9th Putsch in Munich. He marched with the NSDAP to its fateful meeting with the police and Bavarian army at the Feldherrenhalle. Later, he was deeply involved with nationalism bordering on the occult. The Ludendorf Society exists even today in Germany and elsewhere. The print is 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches. It is presently unframed, but would lend itself to a great-looking framed treasure. The signature is clear and fine. The color superlative!

Von Ludendorff Items (Item KPHOTO 2-3)

DESCRIPTION: General Field Marshall Erich von Ludendorff was the famous WWI hero who, with von Hindenburg, smashed the Russian forces at Tannenberg and other places that now are the historic saga of the German nation. Later, the old warrior felt the magnetic pull of Nazism and joined with Hitler prior to the November 9 Putsch in Munich. He marched with the NSDAP to its fateful meeting with the police and Bavarian army at the Feldherrenhalle. Later, he was deeply involved with nationalism bordering on the occult. The Ludendorff Society exists even today in Germany and elsewhere. These items are from the personal effects of Margreth Ludendorff, wife of the general. The items include a signed photo of the general in a period frame; a photo on card stock of the general at his desk. This is a card sent to the princess of the Hohenzollern dynasty that translates: "Your Highness, Dear Princess. You have made me very happy with your sweet little daughter's pictures. Many thanks. I am very sorry you are not sitting across from me. I am really sad you couldn't come to me. The visit of your mother made me so happy. Hope you will plan a visit later. Many greetings dear little princess. Your dear faithful Margreth Ludendorff." Additional items are three card-stock photos that were signed as to identifications by General Kähn whom the writer of the cards says was a famous German general. The first shows Field Marshal Hindenburg, Ludendorff, and other military leaders at Tannenberg. The second is another picture of the Tannenberg memorial, and the third is a picture of Hindenburg, Ludendorff, Kähn, himself, and other leaders at Tannenberg in 1924. This one has Kähn's signature with writing explaining the event. All of these pictures were given by the late Hohenzollern Prince Louis Ferdinand to an English author who recently died.

Framed Original Photograph of Hussars (Item KPHOTO 2-6)

DESCRIPTION: This is a great original photograph of an assemblage of Imperial Hussars of the 2nd Escadrille of the Hussar Regiment Landgraf Friedrich von Hessen, Hamburg NR. 14. The picture was produced in excellent original photography in memory of the “Gefreiten-Beförderung; Dd 22. Sept. 1898,” which translates roughly to “The subordinate enlisted man’s reunion.” The framed and professionally snapped picture is 15 ½ x 13 ½ inches, but the picture by itself is 10 ½ x 8 ½ inches. It is really nicely posed by the Husaren and in their hands appear the requisite mugs of beer. They are quite dashing in their resplendent black uniforms and truly the Deutsche Hussars were the elite of the German Cavalry establishment. they were generally chosen form the aristocracy and landed gentry families. This is a very unusual pose and very definitely historically important.

Photograph of Imperial Naval Officer in Full-Dress Uniform (Item KPHOTO 2-7; KRIEG 5-10)

DESCRIPTION: This photograph is the very one shown in Johnson and Wittman’s book Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany, Volume I. You can see the image on page 90. They call it a resplendent uniform called a Gala Rock (high-dress tunic) with fore-and-aft hat. The dark lapels and cuffs would indicate that this officer was assigned to the marine engineer branch. He holds the rank of Oberleutnant zur See. The picture measures 4 x 6 1/2 inches and is marked with the name of the photography studio, ‘Ferd. Urbahns’ in the naval city and port of Kiel. It is called a Hofphotograph (palace photo) and F. Urbahns was official photographer of the Imperial Crown Prince of Prussia. This is a beautiful portrait of a young officer who served Kaiser and Fatherland. It is mounted on the thick hardboard photo stock of the era.

Original pictures such as this are quite rare and seldom seen, today. The larger one is 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, while the other is 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches.  Group Picture of Imperial Hussars (Item KPHOTO 2-7; KRIEG 5-10)

DESCRIPTION: This picture is nothing short of “Great” showing a dozen fine looking  Hussars of the 2nd Company of the Husaren Regiment Landgraf Friedrich V. Hessen Homburg Nr. 14. It is a remarkably crisp, clear photo of these dashing “Soldiers of the Horse”. The Hussars were light cavalry and considered the elite of the equestrian forces of Imperial Germany. Just as the Hussar became a symbol of Germany so did the stein of beer that all these men hold clutched in their hands. Interesting also is that each one grips the beer glass handle with the right hand! This was an age where every boy and girl of noble breeding was taught with their education that it was sophisticated to be right handed and only peasants (and foreigners) used the left. – Just a little antidote of history. In any case this is a charming original 1890’s photo probably taken in one of Germany’s finest studios. With the frame the picture measures 15 x 14, while the actual picture is 10 ½ x 9. At the top it says “Zur Erinnerung an die Gefreiton Bei Fürderung d 22 Sept 1898” (translated – In Memory of the Military Personal, Promotions of Sept. 22, 1898). So it is sort of an honorary commencement portrait of sorts. In any came a really great glimpse into a “better” past.

A Magnificent Postcard Album of the Prussian Crown Prince (Item KPHOTO 2-8 & KBOOKS 1-11 & KHISTORY 1-12)

DESCRIPTION: This album is filled with 81 postcards all depicting the Prussian Crown Prince Wilhelm (1882-1951) and his family. Many poses of the handsome Prince in various outfits -- civilian and hunting uniforms and civilian and hunting clothing. There are also many pictures of his beautiful wife Cecillle (1886- 1954). She was the crown Princess of Prussian. Also pictured together with their father and mother and individually are their children, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, Prince Louis Ferdinand, Prince Hubertus, Prince Fredrich, Princess Alexandrine, and Princess Cecille. The album measures 8" x 5" and is about 1 ½ inches thick. The album cover has a picture of the crown Prince in equestrian pose. The postcards are 5 ½" x 3 ½" in size. All the cards have titles painted on them. This is especially handy when it comes to identifying the children. Every one of the 81 cards is in immaculate condition and every one of them are of great historical interest and extremely scarce! The picture of the Princess Cecille with German soldiers and their officers is especially charming and she has her three sons with her dressed in their sailor suits. The dashing Prince is featured repeatedly throughout the album as soldier and family man.

The album was procured at a 2009 military show from an older gentleman who said he collected the pictures for years and treasured them because his father was a gardener for the crown Prince at Potsdam and Berlin. The Prince was a noble member of the Hohenzollern Dynasty and probably he and his good wife were possibly the most photogenic of all the German Royalty. We have never seen such a great assemblage of pictures of this family before in all our years in this field. The absolute charm that emanates from the little album is immediately noticed when one opens the covers; every card is reminiscent of the days of glory and Teutonic splendor. We have pictured here only a few of the cards as space allows, but to choose ‘the best of them’ would be virtually impossible -- they are all in a word, ‘Great.’

PRICE: $1,215.00 This adds up to only $15 a card and many of them would easily fetch $20-$30 each at a postcard show.
