Reich’s Spiegel (Mirror) (Item KMISC 2-1)

DESCRIPTION: This is a very handsome mirror crafted in leather. It’s similar to the work found on the giant chair at Item WILHELM 6-1. The work is reminiscent of the beautiful leather craft of Hulbe of Hamburg, who was the master of the art in the Kaiser’s era. The mirror itself is very heavy and for this reason we feel it’s from the 1870s or 1880s. The embossed Imperial eagle is of the Hohenzollern style with the Royal Prussian colors of black and white in its chest. The quality and style of this piece makes us think it was for a member of royalty or the nobility of Prussia; possibly for a hunting lodge because of the rustic look of the handle and the leather stitching that secures the glass. Some of the leather ties are broken way, but the piece is holding up well. The mirror itself is about 5 3/4 inches in diameter and the entire object is 10 inches tall. There is some minor damage at the tip of the handle, but it’s not bad and does not detract from the overall great appearance of the piece. It will look great laid on your Hohenzollern dressing table!

Book Das Buch von den preussischen Königen (Item KMISC 2-2)

DESCRIPTION: The Book of German Kings is a very nice little book of the finest quality by D. Bernhard Rogge in 1891. It has the story of each German king, emperor, and kaisers from Frederick I through Frederick Wilhelm I, to Frederick the Second (the Great!); many more right up to the warrior king Wilhelm I and his son Frederick III and the one most familiar to us all, King Wilhelm II, Deutscher Kaiser. All the portraits are extra sharp and beautiful. The book measures 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches and is 1 1/2 inches thick. It comprises 544 pages of pictures and text. It has beautiful raised-relief portrait of Wilhelm II on the cover.

Boy’s Military Tunic Made to Scale (Item KMISC 2-3; WWI 10-4; KTOY 1-9)

DESCRIPTION: This is a great, little uniform tunic probably ordered to be tailored by a proud father who was himself a soldier of the Kaiser Wilhelm I or Wilhelm II era. We are not quite sure of the exact period. We do believe that because of the type of the numerals on the shoulder boards that the regiment that it is representative of is a Prussian artillery regiment probably the King of Prussia Volunteer Corps (von Lützowiches), but we also reserve the secondary opinion that it could be an Uhlan regiment. In any case, it’s a period piece in good condition except for one small tear in the fabric at the back of one sleeve about an inch long. All the military copper-colored buttons are intact and present. The gold-bullion trim sets off the blue fabric making this a very sharp little tunic. I’m sure the little-guy soldier who wore this made his dad as proud as a peacock as he marched back and forth across the living room to the tune of “Prussia’s Gloria” played on the phonograph player. This is truly a great and sentimental treasure of yesteryear.

German 5 Mark Coin from the Kaiser's Reich (Item KMISC 2-4)

DESCRIPTION: We are not coin dealers and virtually know nothing about this specialty field, but we have always admired the sheer beauty of the German pre-war large coins. It is gorgeous but also strong looking and of dramatic design. The front side depicts Kaiser Wilhelm II and says along the edges of the portrait (translated) Wilhelm II Kaiser and King of the Prussians. On the reverse is the Grand Imperial eagle and translated it says, German Reich 1908 five marks. Along the edges or rim it says Gott Mit Uns (God with Us). The condition would rate excellent plus or (AU) in ‘coin talk’ -- the coin is big, the size of an American silver dollar, almost 2 inches in diameter. Why do we offer a coin? Well because of the obvious artistic beauty of this particular piece; it is reminiscent to us if only in our dreams of a better age and a glorious empire of nobility. Germanophiles will love the look and feel of this relic of Der Alte Deutschland!

Beautiful German WWI Period Smoking Pipe (Item KMISC 2-5; WILHELM 9-19; KGLASS 3-18)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a smaller version of the gigantically long commemorative pipes that were purchased in the 1870s to the beginning of WWI by graduating students from regimental academies and such. They are invariably beautiful and were costly, even in their day. The new officer candidates were very proud of these beautiful memory objects from their service time. This one is particularly spiffy in that is has the depiction of Kaiser Wilhelm II as its central theme on the pipe bowl surrounded by raised oak leaves and acorns tied together by a bow at the bottom. The cap on the bowl is reminiscent of a stylized German spike helmet. The stem is of hand-carved bone or horn (elaborately carved). The tip of the stem is of a material that freely bends mounted over a spring that is quite flexible. When laid out straight the whole piece measures 2 feet long. The pipe bowl itself is about 5 inches tall and about 2 inches wide. This is really a gorgeous item and reminds one of the glories of the Hohenzollern Reich at its peak.

PRICE: $285.00; a very modest price
